Trick or Treat – Halloween Dog
This fully 3D artwork was created in 2023 for a Halloween contest. I wanted to capture a fun and heartwarming moment: a dog dressed as a ghost, ready for trick-or-treating. The scene was designed to evoke the cozy feeling of autumn nights, with soft lighting and a festive atmosphere.
The Concept: A Warm Halloween Night
The idea was to create a Halloween image that was more cute than scary. The main character, an enthusiastic dog under a ghost sheet, is the heart of the scene. Around him, classic Halloween elements like carved pumpkins and autumn leaves create a familiar and comforting setting.
The main challenge was to find the right lighting balance to create a nighttime scene that remains readable, colorful, and lively, while keeping a touch of Halloween mystery.
Technical Execution
The scene was fully modeled, textured, and rendered in 3D. Special care was given to the lighting to simulate the soft glow of candles inside the pumpkins and the ambient light from an off-screen streetlamp. Look development was crucial to give the different materials (the sheet fabric, the dog's fur, the pumpkin wax) a tangible and realistic appearance.
What I learned
I learned that a night image can stay readable without losing its sense of darkness. The warm pumpkin lights needed to support the character instead of competing with it. Balancing fur, fabric and wax under one lighting setup helped keep the scene coherent.
